NEWTON ABBOT RACE COURSE

As the railway leaves Newton Abbot it travels up the western bank of the River Teign, the other side of which is Newton Abbot Race Course. In a recent look at reopening the remnants of the line as a Park & Ride system, Ecorail Ltd proposed that under the road bridge would make an excellent site for a halt on racedays. Newton Abbot station on these days can be awash with people alighting trains from all directions, especially from Torbay and at the moment have to walk the mile to the race course.

Unfortunately Ecorail Ltd felt that the work needed to bring the freight only track up to passenger standards before a train can run was cost prohibitive at the moment, but retains its interest in this line reopening in the future.

It was also proposed to put a hospital halt in a little further up, but in discussions with Teignbridge District and Devon County Council officials it was discovered that the current traffic problems are set to be alleviated by an extension of the new road leading to the Hospital, to be extended to the Bovey Road, bypassing most of the current bottlenecks.
